2012 Kiwibank Local Heroes Medal Recipients for

the Wairarapa

Graeme Butcher of Masterton
Graeme was (and is the only surviving member) of the original three people who amalgamated Masterton Athletics, Masterton Cycling, and Masterton Harriers. The amalgamation has helped all divisions grow resulting in many NZ representatives which have been helped by the club benefiting from the enormous voluntary workload of Graeme. He has won the NZ 100km champs twice, and won the local Marathon many times. On top of his outstanding club duties he has been a school board trustee and often offers training advice for members. He often flies under the radar, and as his nominator says “never seeks publicity.”
Amberly Sutherland of Masterton
Amberly, now 21yrs old suffered a debilitating stroke at 18, the resulting paralysis of her left side thwarting her competitive Highland dancing ambitions.
It was during this time, being unable to dance, that Amberly's love of bagpipes flourished and she used these to help aid her recovery. Although she was undergoing intensive physiotherapy to help her regain mobility and the use of her left side, she completed her schooling and also assisted her mother with the daily care of a newborn grandson which helped in her recovery. Through sheer determination and a herculean amount of willpower, by 2010 Amberly was dancing again, she was in a pipe band and studying to become a dance teacher. She raised a significant amount of money for the Shave for a Cure cancer fundraising event, and shaved her head in April 2010 for this worthy cause. Sadly, just over a year ago she lost her mother to terminal cancel and despite being only 20 at the time was granted guardianship of her siblings young children Shaeane and Aaron, and has cared for them fulltime since. Although Amberly has suffered through a stroke and the devastating loss of her mum at a young age, she has put her hand up, gave up her employment and stepped up to take care of the two children. Due to factors during his mother's pregnancy, Aaron has special needs and ongoing health issues. Despite all she has been through, Amberly is now qualified to teach dancing at college level. She has also sat and passed several piping exams and has competed in piping competitions. Amberly has selflessly given up her life to raise Shaeane and Aaron to the best of her ability. Her nominator says “Amberly is an inspiration and I would love for her to have some recognition for all she has been through, and what she continues to do for the kids.”
Shona Jones of Hunterville
Shona is a mother of four school aged children and specialises in community events management and people putting the town of Hunterville on the map as secretary and administrator for the Hunterville Huntaway festival. She also works with other volunteer organisations as well including “Carols at Rathmoy” and various children’s groups as well. Shana’s impact and dedication to her community has been huge, attending innumerable meetings and activities in her perseverance to overcome obstacles and get the job done. Continually being approached by local organisations requiring her assistance, Shona has made costumes for school productions to organising a stopover for the Cure Kids for Cancer Fundraiser, covered the secretarial position at the local rugby club and did typing for the Volunteer Fire Brigade. As a result of their appreciation, the local community gave Shona and her husband a trip away which she subsequently turned into a promotional weekend for Hunterville! In the words of her nominator, “Shona Jones truly is Hunterville’s hero.”
